DURHAM, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2025 — Southern Coalition for Social Justice is devoted to advancing justice and building risk-free, thriving communities. We reject the obsolete view that criminal justice is a zero-sum game that matches security versus justice against each other. Furthermore, background– and plenty of researches, information, and lived experiences– tells us reactive policymaking driven by national politics and worry in feedback to a specific event, despite exactly how dreadful, leads to poor regulations that offers neither justice neither safety and security.
These are simply a few of the reasons we are deeply worried about any regulation that offers just a lot more prison, jail, and executions as remedies, rather than sources and focus to deal with the origin and systemic problems. Our company believe in evidence-based options, not tired “hard on crime” responses that abuse public resources and, most importantly, don’t make us safer.
Neighborhoods are safest when individuals have access to prompt mental health care, cost effective housing, educational chances, and great jobs. For too long, nonetheless, public safety and security policy has been driven by worry, racism, and misinformation rather than proof The result is an overly punishing system that falls short to shield all neighborhoods relatively. Raising the variety of people held in prisons and jails, accelerating state-sponsored executions, and pushing death-by-firing-squad as a way for executing those executions is not a recipe for public safety.
There is an urgent requirement for investment in community-based assistances that satisfy individuals’s demands before injury happens. Psychological health and wellness treatment, restorative techniques, investment in and support of reentry efforts, housing security, and chances for young people are the paths to more secure communities.
Our state deals with an option: spend even more in systems of punishment that have failed to provide safety and security and justice or focus our resources on genuine solutions addressing the source of harm.
